Item Description
1.25" with small text of maker W&H and more extensive text we will quote later. The button shows full figure Uncle Sam having just pulled down a Spanish flag and putting an American flag in its place. The scene is flanked by a soldier at left and a sailor at right. In the distance are several tiny warships. This all appears under the slogan "'We Have Remembered The Maine.'" Bottom edge has 1898 copyright of designer "Charles W. Reitler." The text on the backpaper names "The Reitler Patriotic Publishing Co., Denver, Colo." Their name appears below a paragraph of text reading "This Certifies that the purchaser hereof has contributed toward a fund, to be used in the presentation of appropriated remembrances for the brave gunners in the American Navy, to commemorate their accurate firing in the last American-Spanish War." We know of six buttons done in this cartoon style and the five others follow this item. This one is among the rarest of all the designs. Very trivial surface marks, barely showing even in reflected light. Exc. and displays Mint.
