Item Description
2-1/8" button has metal back and bar pin. Front has small bump center right caused by bar pin when the piece was assembled but otherwise it displays essentially Mint. Illustrated is "U.S.S. Rhind" with launching date of "July 28, 1938." Text at button top reads "Philadelphia Navy Yard/Launching/Destroyer No. 404." This ship served as a carrier escort then in June, 1941 it went on neutrality patrol in the North Atlantic. It also accompanied President Franklin Roosevelt to Newfoundland for Atlantic Charter conferences. It earned four battle stars during World War II. It was then at the atomic tests conducted at Bikini "Crossroads" where is survived two tests but was highly contaminated and eventually was sunk March 22, 1948. Very limited issue.
