Item Description
Our research including communication with several top Disney and toy experts lead us to believe this is a prototype of the c. 1930 toy. That toy in and of itself is extremely rare with only four known examples. The only time we ever offered that toy was in 2008 Auction #194 where it sold for $9,487. 8" tall tin litho with built-in key. Toy works and shakes about as it walks forward. While the production piece had tradition Mickey pants of red with white buttons, this has lithography of yellow striped red pants with totally different style buttons in matching yellow color. In fact the entire body is lithographed like this but upper body was overpainted in black. Face also has painted details, not litho and nose added but all believed to have been done at the time and at the factory. Ears appear to be original to the toy. One arm is an original Distler Mickey w/yellow gloved hand and five fingers but missing tabs so now loose but could be easily repaired. The other arm is very similar but a replacement. The tell-tale sign this is a Distler prototype are the feet. These were created using another Distler toy, an Easter egg containing a wind-up chick. That egg was decorated on the outside w/images of well-dressed rabbits. Those images appear on the underside of each foot as manufacturing scraps were used to produce these feet. Prototype shows all over general wear/aging. Few missing tabs on body but all stays firmly together as intended and works as it should. Moderate paint wear/aging but retains a very nice appearance overall. VG. A truly unique item, a must have for the serious Disneyana and/or tin toy collector.
