Item Description
Unique lot includes art for 20 of 24 pages of 1943 "Santa's Christmas Comic Variety Show" Sears premium comic book as well as promo flyer original art and printed examples of comic book and promo flyers. Includes full color 8x10.75" 24-page newsprint comic w/Dick Tracy, Orphan Annie, Terry, and their comic character friends in especially done riddles, adventures, puzzles, games, etc., most w/either a Christmas or WWII theme. Has a tiny 1/8x.75" chip out of back cover top margin edge where it was attached to promo flyer but o/w VF/NM. Comes w/promo ad folder, 8.5x11" w/four pages of great graphics of famous Chicago Tribune comic strip characters including Dick Tracy and Terry promoting this Sears 1943 giveaway comic book. Back cover shows Tracy and five different poster designs. Folder advertises 24-page comic book available for 2¢ w/expiration date of Oct. 21, 1943. Third page has staple at top which originally held in place example comic book and has chip of paper from back of comic. Lt. wear/aging. Fine. Lot also includes interesting follow-up promo flyer w/one bw printed side which has Dick Tracy asking store manager "Why Haven't You Ordered Your Copies Yet?" Crease across one corner with lt. wear/aging. Fine. Also included are two heavy illustration boards, each 15x20" w/11x17" bw india ink image area w/original art on first board for front and back cover of promo folder and original art on second board for double-page inside of promo folder. Cover portion of first board has 2-1/8x4-5/8" area of yellowing from glue stain, last portion of text at bottom has paste-up. Wonderful image of Santa in cockpit of plane surrounded by comic character friends including Dick Tracy, Orphan Annie and Terry in stars around the plane. Left side which is back cover art is original of Tracy w/three applied photostats promoting comic book. Most of image area is lightly yellowed. Second board has wonderful original art of smiling Santa and comic strip character friends w/him holding photostat paste-up of comic book w/text promotion. Right side is missing 3 7/8x7.25" photostat text leaving lt. glue stain. Most of text is hand-done but a few portions are photostats which are a bit yellowed. A .5" area in Santa's beard has trace of lt. glue stain o/w image area on both is Exc. The main feature of this lot is 20 pages of original art for the 24-page premium comic book. Each page is on thin 14 5/8x18.25" art board and most have image area of 12.25x16.75" in bw india ink w/hand-watercolored matching tissue overlay. Cover art has smiling Santa holding open his sack w/comic characters running out into footlights including Moon Mullins taking a bow w/Dick Tracy and others in bkg. Right side has 1.25x4" glue stain, bottom portion of art has 1.5x12" lt. glue stain. Overlay has 1.25" jagged tear at bottom edge. Large single panel images include Orphan Annie, Terry and The Pirates, Harold Teen. Included are two Dick Tracy theme pages, Don Winslow puzzle page; individual pages for Skeezix, Smokey Stover, Corky and Judy, Kayo, Punjab, Moon Mullins, a few pages have multiple characters. Wonderful back cover art of Santa introducing Annie who holds sign reading "Thank You And Merry Christmas From All Of Us!" w/Tracy, Smitty and Herby standing behind her in spotlight as youthful audience applauds. Missing are pages 12-15 to complete book. A few pages have applied text which may have minor glue stains around edges but overall image areas are clean. VF to Exc. appearance. Wonderful art w/great likenesses for one of the nicest comic strip premium comic books ever done. Historic and unique. Additional photos available online.
