Item Description
Issued in 1937 by Doughnut Corporation of America. The cards in this set were printed on doughnut boxes and meant to be hand-cut and then mounted in the album. The large album is 10x15" w/16 pages and contains the complete set of 72 cards all neatly cut and mounted at appropriate spots. Cards are about 1-7/8x2-13/16". An exceptional mix of subjects including athletes, Presidents, historical figures, aviators, explorers, war heroes, etc. The highlight of the sports stars is Babe Ruth but others include: Red Grange, Knute Rockne, Jack Dempsey, John L. Sullivan, Bobby Jones, Glenna Collett, Bill Tilden, Barney Oldfield. Other notable names include: Edison, Custer, Pershing, Crockett, Wright Bros., TR, Sitting Bull, Byrd, Frank Buck, Carnegie, Lindbergh, Geo. Washington, Lincoln, Earhart and more. Cards are mounted four per page, plus inside covers, and each has very detailed bio text on the pages. Cover art repeated front/back shows a boy cutting and assembling his album, a plate of doughnuts on the table. Album has obvious wear. Page loose from cover but still intact. Cover and pages have moderate aging. Cover has scattered edge crease, trace of moisture staining at top but only noticeable on inside and not affecting the cards. Pages have small scattered margin tears and corner chips. Cover/pages Good. Eight cards in this set always have a small crescent-shaped cut at one top corner as these cards were at the thumb hole area of the box and therefore just as issued and as such, not considered a defect. Of the cards noted above, this only affects Earhart, Buck and Oldfield. All cards have great appearance as mounted including sharp corners and as previously mentioned very neatly cut. Lt. aging to a few but all w/bold graphics. Visually grading Exc./NM or better. A rare album.
