Catalog description-
This is an extraordinary offering, the most complete and definitive collection ever assembled. In total there are 10 different, complete Mutoscope sets including many variants, in addition to two other related sets, for a grand total of 496 cards in this lot. All are 3.5x5.5" featuring exceptional pin-up art by the likes of Earl Moran, Gil Elvgren, Billy DeVorss, Rolf Armstrong, Peter Driben, Mabel Harris, Al Buell, Earl Christie, Edward D'Ancona, and more. Here are the basics of what we are offering concerning the Mutoscope cards in this lot: Glamour Girls 1940 set of 32, All American Girls 1941 set of 32 plus 8 variant cards, Yankee Doodle Girls 1942 set of 32 plus 3 variant cards, Hotcha Girls 1943 set of 65 plus 64 variants, Follies Girls 1944 set of 32 plus 1 variant card, Artist Pin-Up Girls 1945 set of 64, Calendar Girls Series 1 1950 set of 32, Slick Chicks 1950-1951 set of 32, Calendar Girls Series 2 1952-1954 Series 2 set of 32 plus 2 variants, Slick Chick Twins 1952-1954 set of 32. In addition to this there are two unrelated postcard sets from the 1940s featuring "Good Girl" art that make a nice complement to the Mutoscope cards. One is a set of 15 identified by "DG" numbers, the other is a set of 18 identified as "Glamour Girls" and numbered as "GL" (with all art by B. Armstrong), both are issued by Tichnor Quality Views/Postage Stamp Machine Co. Condition across the board is high-grade, mostly NM/Mint. A complete and detailed list of every series, card and variant as well as expanded condition notes available online, or contact us for a physical list if desired. Online you will also find a very detailed and informative account of how this collection was assembled by the consignor. As you can imagine, this was no easy task. What we are offering here is the ultimate collection that can be acquired intact as assembled. What took our consignor decades to assemble can be yours with one bid.

Consignor's detailed account-
Back in 1980 when I began collecting the good girl art cards by artists like Earl Moran, Gil Elvgren and Zoe Mozert, the ones distributed by Mutoscope in penny arcade vending machines, I had no idea there were more than just the six sets distributed by Mutoscope in the 1940s. Apparently around 1950 Exhibit obtained the rights to the six Mutoscope sets and published the four additional sets using some of the Mutoscope images and some new ones. To this day most collectors are unaware of the existence of the four additional, much rarer sets published by Exhibit in the early 1950s. A book on this material written recently made no mention of these sets. Possibly the author was unaware even that they exist. The extreme rarity of these four Exhibit sets is well demonstrated by the fact that in 2010 I did a search for good girl art cards on eBay, and out of over 800 listings not one was from one of these slightly later four Exhibit sets.
Even over twenty years ago when I was assembling this collection, cards from these four sets were almost impossible to find. I was extremely lucky to find the last two of these four sets complete for $1,600.00 from someone who had worked for Exhibit and saved a mint one of each set which had never been sold in a vending machine. This left me to hunt down the first two, the most scarce sets, Calendar Girls I and Calendar Girls II. Since this was in the days before the Internet, I could only do this by sending my want list to every dealer on the International Postcard Dealers Association membership list once every year. I bought every card from Calendar Girls I that I was offered so I would have duplicates to trade. I often traded three for two and occasionally even two for one. Calendar Girls I is a thirty-two card set. Imagine how many thousands and thousands of Mutoscope pin up cards you have seen at shows from the first six sets at shows, on eBay, etc. In fifteen years I encountered fewer than one hundred Calendar Girls I.
After fifteen years I had never seen or even heard of a copy of Calendar Girls I "Plenty on the Ball," a picture of a young lady swinging a golf club. It was the last card I was missing. Then I encountered a golf card collector, and I learned why it was so scarce. Golf card collectors all wanted it. It had the double whammy rareness of a cross over card. It cost me $300.00 to pry this card out of this collector even back then. I thought it was worth it considering the cost of mailing out my want list every year to say nothing of the time this took.
While collecting the 380+ cards in these sets plus the many variants, I regularly read "The Wrapper" and "Penny Arcade" as well as communicated with the major experts and collectors of this material. I saw to it that this collection included all the known variants of the Mutoscope cards, large letters vs. small letters, moved cartouches, with and without artist's credits, etc.
To the best of my knowledge this is the only complete collection of all ten sets of both the Mutoscope and the Exhibit good girl art cards. Two unrelated sets I collected at the time are included as a bonus. Considering the almost total lack of availability of the four Exhibit sets, it is highly unlikely there ever will be another complete set like this.
While not every card in this collection is mint, the majority are mint, and the Calendar Girls I and II are the best I saw in the fifteen years it took me to assemble this collection. It is truly unique, one of a kind.
