Item Description
8.25x11" Vol. 1 #2 issue for Aug. 23, 1954. 88 pages which includes 3-page fold out with a total of 27 cards with players shown on the front and their stats on back. Page 26 has an article titled "The Yankees Are Still The Team To Beat" and explains why some people collect baseball cards and what makes some more valuable than others. Text includes "Topps Chewing Gum Issues An Average Of 15 Cards Per Team And The 15 Yankees Cards In Topps 1954 Series Are Reproduced Front And Back In Color On The Following Fold Out. They Are, Of Course, Prize Items. But Sports Illustrated Has Added Prize Items Of Its Own To Fill Out The Yankees Squad To Full Strength: Black And White Cards, Front And Back, Of Those Yankees For Whom Topps - For One Good Reason Or Another - Did Not Print Cards. The Result Is A Collector's Dream: 27 Yankees, A Collection Almost Beyond The Highest Hopes Of The Most Avid Gum-Chewing, Card-Collecting Boy". Black and white cards include Mickey Mantle and Enos Slaughter. In 1954 and 1955 Topps did not release any regular issue Mantle cards because Bowman had signed exclusive agreements with a number of players including Mantle. In 1956 Topps purchased Bowman, thus avoiding this situation in future sets. Front cover has bit of residue at lower left from address label removal. VF. Contents are Exc. and baseball insert is NM. A very interesting item for the baseball card enthusiast and Mantle completist.
