Item Description
2.5x4" card stock photo for Lydia Thompson (1838-1908). Wonderful image shows Thompson in profile holding riding crop. Photo is by Gurney New York City and reverse side has ink stamp denoting that this cabinet photo was used for newspaper or magazine publicity. c. 1868-1874. Thompson was an English dancer, actress and theatrical producer who introduced burlesque to America in 1868 to great acclaim. Thompson's tour took New York by storm; originally scheduled for six months the tour ran for six years and went on to leading theaters across US. The Chicago Times newspaper owner Wilbur Storey criticized the show's immorality and her personal morals which eventually led to Thompson and her husband horse whipping Storey at gun point for which they were arrested and fined. Card has lt. dust soil, reverse side has ink stamps and notes. Front appearance is Fine overall. Wonderful slice of burlesque history.
