Text on front includes "The Largest Elephant Ever Seen By Mortal Man, Wild Or In Captivity. The Property Of Messrs. Barnum, Bailey & Hutchinson. Cost Thirty Thousand Dollars". Text on reverse reads "Artotype E. Bierstadt 58 & 60 Read St. New York. This Picture Is Printed In Permanent Ink, And Will Never Fade As Ordinary Photographs Do." Mount has some lt. dust soil and a few lt. moisture marks, lower right of card has 2" lt. diagonal crease and upper left corner of card has 1" diagonal crease. Overall mount is VG and photo itself is clear, glossy and near Exc. Jumbo (1861-1885) was a large African Bush elephant imported to a Paris zoo, transferred to the London zoo in 1865, and sold in 1882 to P.T. Barnum for the circus. Barnum earned enough money exhibiting the elephant at Madison Square Garden to recoup the money he spent to buy Jumbo. He died at a railroad yard in Ontario when he was hit by a locomotive. Barnum had him stuffed and donated to Tufts University in 1889. An historic original vintage cabinet photo of a true circus superstar.
