Item Description
Rather than a "card" this is actually a stiff 2.5x5.5" cardboard folder with tan fabric cover for membership in the radical labor union whose organizing efforts brought it into violent conflict with miner owners and the US government. The WFM played a key role in founding the Industrial Workers of the World in 1905, when this member joined the WFM. Inside are places for twelve monthly WFM dues stamps with five mounted and each pencil or ink stamp dated. The ink or pencil information includes "McCabe Miners" designated union number "118." Member's name is "Charles Hiebeb." He was "Admitted Dec. 11 05" and book was issued for year ending "November 30 '06." Interior also has ink stamp name of financial secretary "J. Gallagher." Back cover has facsimile signature of "Charles Moyer" President and "William Haywood" Secretary Treasurer. Text on back cover includes "This Is The Only Official Membership Card Of The Western Federation of Miners, And None Others Will Be Recognized." Also "Labor Produces All Wealth; Wealth Belongs To The Producer There Of." Covers are NM. Interior shows trivial age. An outstanding and rare document in the history of labor and unionism in the United States. Morry Greener Collection.
