Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) was an English composer whose critical successes brought him to the United States for a tour in 1904 which increased his interest in his racial heritage. He did for African music what Brahms did for Hungarian music and his greatest success was with his cantata "Hiawatha's Wedding Feast" which he followed with two other Hiawatha cantatas. Booker T. Washington's preface includes text "Mr. Coleridge-Taylor Is Himself An Inspiration To The Negro, Since He Himself, The Child Of An African Father, Is An Embodiment Of What Are The Possibilities Of The Negro Under Favorable Environment."
