Item Description
This metal piece is 2.25" wide by 3" tall by 5/8" thick. Both the front and back of the convex metal is covered in blue felt. At the top held by a small brass link chain is an actual cork. The back of the piece is blank but the front of the piece has black lettering with the rim reading "We Drank From The Same Canteen 1861-1865." In smaller letters surrounding the cardboard photo is the text "Patented Dec. 7, 1887." Small bit of age on the cardboard photo and the narrow bare edges of the metal where it is not covered in felt shows brown oxidation but this detracts very little from the novelty of this most unusual and rare item designed to appeal to the Civil War veterans who formed the Grand Army of the Republic. Fine and rare. First we've seen. Morry Greener Collection.
