Item Description
The first button is 7/8" with W&H backpaper. Trivial tiny dent on reverse collet but rest is Exc. and displays Mint. Reads "Souvenir Of The Canal Zone/John F. Stevens/Chief Engineer/Panama Canal." This man was hired by Roosevelt and served as chief engineer 1905-1907. He was largely responsible for building the infrastructure at the canal but left to Roosevelt's annoyance as construction of the canal itself began. The second button is 1.25" also with W&H backpaper. This has outer rim reading "Panama Canal Opening Celebration Mobile Oct. 27-29-'13." On the upper black area of the button is a drawing in the shape of the state of Alabama with the words in the "water" area below "Alabama Did It!" Above the outline of the state is the name "John T. Morgan." This man was a six-term senator (1877-1907) who argued tirelessly for the creation of the Panama Canal and increasing America's territorial holdings. He was also an outspoken white supremacist. He is known as the ideological father of the Panama Canal. Button is Exc. and displays Mint. We've seen the Stevens button a couple of times but first example we've seen of the Morgan button.
