Auction #204 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1446 in auction 204
Item Description
These seven items from the 1930s range from the smallest at 5/8" to the largest South Dakota button at 2.5". All relate to a plan proposed by Francis Townsend for a guaranteed monthly old-age pension to be paid for by a national sales tax on business transactions. The idea inspired organizers in almost every state and in 1935, partly in response to the popularity of plan, President Roosevelt proposed his own old-age policy which eventually was passed and named Social Security. The large portrait of Townsend is a litho holding ribbon reading "Visiting Townsend National Convention." Ribbon has some noticeable brown staining on the lower margins but the button has just a few pinpoints of wear on the upper edge. In addition there are two small portrait items and three small slogan buttons, with one being a litho reading "Congress Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness." The cello button reading "Townsend Plan/National Recovery" is rarely seen. This has a few tiny age marks on lower edge. The major rarity in this group is black on gray reading "I Am A Townsendite From S. Dakota/Are You?" We've not seen this before and it is in NM condition displaying Mint.
