Item Description
3.5" button with young photo of Hoffa. Button has obvious union bugs on the front and was made by Bastian Bros. Upper right has small pinpoint raised dent on the dark bkg. caused by the mounting of the bar pin on the reverse. Otherwise the piece is basically Mint as made although lacking a little silver luster from its reverse. This item was used at the Miami beach, Florida 1957 convention. Hoffa's predecessor, Dave Beck, had appeared before a U.S. Senate Committee in 1957 and took the Fifth Amendment one hundred and forty times in response to questioning. Beck was indicted when the convention took place and was later convicted on fraud charges. Hoffa was elected to the presidency. However at the AFL/CIO convention later that year in Atlantic City, the union was expelled by a ratio of 5-1 after President George Meany gave an emotional speech stating that he could only agree to affiliate with the Teamsters if Hoffa would be dismissed as their president. Meany demanded a response from Hoffa who replied through the press "We'll See." A rare very limited edition button and the only example we've seen.
