Item Description
Art is for Signet paperback copyright 1962 E.C. Publications. 14x20" high quality rustic wood grained frame has 9x15" opening with non-glare glass. Archival mat board holds 7.5x12" sheet with preliminary art done in ink, watercolor and marker with wonderful image of Alfred E. Neuman dressed as a cowboy holding the reins to a wagon being pulled by bull with modern day police officer writing him a ticket. Art is signed in ink "K Freas" at lower left and mat board has white pencil inscription across bottom "Working Sketch For Signet Paperback - Kelly Freas". Nice detail including arrows sticking out of wagon cover. Bright and Exc. Comes with Fine copy of paperback this preliminary was done for. Kelly Freas (1922-2005) produced his first cover painting for Weird Tales in 1950. Over the next forty years he would contribute numerous cover paintings and interior illustrations for many sci-fi and fantasy pulps, paperbacks, digests, magazines and hardcover books. He was hired by Al Feldstein in 1956 to produce covers, back covers and interiors for Mad Magazine. He was Mad's main cover art from July 1958 until 1962. Fully finished Kelly Freas Mad cover art easily sells in excess of $10,000. Wonderful concept and ready for display.
