Item numbers 1 through 1446 in auction 204
Item Description
Original stiff cardboard box is about 3.5" square and nearly 1" thick. It is lined in dark purple velvet. Outer lid has name of the exposition and date and underside has name of the medal maker "Gorham Man'f'c Co." Various corners of the box edges are splitting but lid and bottom remain attached. The medal itself is stamped "Gorham Co" on the side edge along with the word "Bronze" although the piece is actually in a silver luster. There are four areas on the rim edge with indentations either as dents or as the result of small flaws in the striking. Other than these edge marks the front and back surfaces of the design are Extremely Fine. Front of the piece has nude figure posed before a buffalo. At bottom is lower panel designating the company receiving the award "Lewis Brothers" and below this is the name of the medal designer which is "Hermon Mac Neil Sc." Reverse of the piece has female figure apparently representing South America seated to left of Native American in headdress apparently representing North America and they are handing a peace pipe between themselves. Although with small edge flaws on the medal still a beautifully designed and extremely rare award medal.
