Item Description
9-7/8x20.75" paper poster likely designed for September 23rd, 1937 fight against Harry Jeffra during which Jeffra captured the Bantam Weight Title by out-pointing Escobar. Both are shown on the poster which was designed by Jeffra’s manager Max Waxman and includes text at bottom “This Is A Bona-Fide Offer-Not A Publicity Stunt”. Waxman’s address is listed c/o Jack Dempsey’s Corner. Poster has several vertical and horizontal folds with transparent tape repairs on fold line on blank reverse. Just Good, but would frame and display nicely. Sixto Escobar was a Puerto Rican professional boxer who competed in the Bantam Weight Division and became Puerto Rico’s first World Champion. He had a total of 68 fights with 43 wins including 19 by knockout, 22 losses, and three draws. Harry Jeffra’s career ran from 1933 to 1950 and included 93 wins with 27 knockouts, 20 losses and seven draws. Escobar and Jeffra fought again in 1938 with Escobar winning and the two met again in what would be Escobar’s last fight with no title on the line which Jeffra won with a ten round decision. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
