Item Description
Each is 7x9" glossy c.1930. Each has pencil caption on back along with ink stamp of photographer L. Van Oeyen and captions are likely written by him. Photos were taken at April 30th opening of Cleveland Indians-Chicago White Sox game in Cleveland. Images include Dempsey talking with sports broadcaster Tom Manning at WTAM Microphone, in catchers outfit squatting, and shaking hands with Cleveland Indian first baseman Lew Fonseca. Photos are Exc. with sharp, clear images. Photographer Louis Van Oeyen (1865-1946) was the first newspaper staff photographer in Cleveland. The noted photographer covered politics, disaster, crime, scandal and sports but his greatest love was baseball. He was named the official photographer of the American League of Professional Baseball in 1908, and then for the World Series until 1922. Wonderful crossover item for boxing and baseball fans.
