Item Description
Each is 3-3/8x5-3/8". First is c.1910 titled on front “Johnson And Wife Reno, Nev.” with photographer name Cann. Photo shows Johnson sitting on porch steps with his white wife holding his hands and apparent trainers nearby. Second postcard is c.1915 with photographer text “Martine Havana” showing well-dressed Johnson in back seat of open car sitting next to well-dressed white man with black chauffeur at the wheel. Third postcard has printed text on front in Spanish which includes “Jack Johnson Tiajuana 1920" and shows well-dressed Johnson proudly standing with his wife and three friends with arms interlocked. Johnson was living in Mexico at the time to avoid being arrested for Mann Act violations and shortly after this photo is dated he returned to the U.S. On July 20th he surrendered and was sent to the U.S. Penitentiary for one year and one day. First and third card have ink writing on reverse but were never mailed. All three cards have lt. dust soil. First postcard has vertical crease near center. Overall first two are VG and 1920 card is VF. Great images of the legendary Heavyweight Champion. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
