Item Description
The first 54 buttons in this group are from a 1968 set of 30 designs, each 1.75" and produced in five different colors: blue, green, orange, pink, yellow. Each shows Pogo and/or characters from the comic strip and each button reads "© 1968 Walt Kelly." All of these are scarce as distribution at the time was very limited. This is by far the largest group we know of. There are 24 different of the 30 different designs and of the potential full set of five colors times 30 designs, this group consists of 54 of potentially 150 different buttons. Of the 54, 18 have noticeable but lt. age spots. The remaining 36 are essentially Exc. to Mint. The collector who assembled these was a Pogo specialist and with this group comes nearly all, if not all, of the additional known Pogo buttons produced from the 1950s into the Fan Club years of 1990s. Those items, in the order of our photograph, consists of pair of "I Go Pogo" buttons, one from his 1952 campaign and one from his 1956 campaign. Each of these is a 7/8" litho. In addition is a large 4" tin litho used as a newspaper promotional. This also reads "I Go Pogo 1956" and was made by Green Duck. Couple of tiny rubs on his upper left head and a few scattered tiny marks on the extreme edge but VF and a very scarce limited edition. Next are two particularly rare buttons. One is 1.75" carrying the name "Walt Kelly" and picturing "Great Speckled Bird." The second rarity is 1.25" picturing Pogo and reading "Read It!/35¢/Pogo For President/35¢/A Crest Paperback." Next is a 2.5" newspaper promotional from Long Island showing Pogo holding newspapers under one arm which are inscribed "Sunday Newsday." Rim reads "Try It You'll Like It" and this carries "© 1972 Walt Kelly" tiny text. This has two very faint tan age marks near the edges. Next is a "Made In Japan" toy watch consisting of metal frame and paper insert with a pink elastic band on the underside. Chruchy is shown at left and Pogo at right. Next is 1.5" button which carries curl text "Pogo © 1952 Walt Kelly" but this piece would be from the 1970s as it carries name of maker "Donnelly/Colt Buttons" of Connecticut. Next is 2.25" commemorative button produced slightly after Kelly died. This reads "I Go Pogo" and has small text "© 1980 Estate Of Walt Kelly." Next to this is a 1-5/8" tall tab with the same text as the previous item. Next is a 1.5" litho which along with the following two 2-3/8" celluloids were issued by the Pogo Fan Club which began in 1984. Each of these three items carries inscription "Copyright OGPI" which stands for Okefenokee Glee & Perloo, Inc. While these last five pieces are more modern than the preceding they were all done in small quantities. This group of 67 pieces has rather substantial opening bid, it is in fact very reasonable as the 54 buttons from the 1968 series have for decades sold in range of $100 each if undamaged. That group of 54 plus the rarities in the miscellaneous group in our opinion puts the value of the group well over $4,000 if it were to be pieced out.
