Item Description
As this box was used for both this Spider ring and our previous item the Operator 5 ring we will describe it first. It is 7/8x1x13/16" tall in dark red cardboard without any text. Lid lifts off to reveal a cardboard base with liner of cream-colored plush fabric to hold the ring in position. The box was used to send rings from the publisher Popular Publications to those readers ordering either ring in 1934. Box lid has two of the four corner seams split and some small dots of red color missing mostly from the side panel corners and edges. Still nicely glossy and clean. Box bottom is Extremely Fine with just a couple of tiny 1/16" missing dots of red color. Box is one of only five or so we've seen in five decades. The ring itself was used only in the USA and the inner band has the trademark symbol of the ring maker Uncus. Canadian versions of this ring also include the inscription "Made In U.S.A." The ring has a solid metal band with size 9.5 opening. Band is nearly perfectly circular but just a hair less so on one side. The narrow most bottom of the band has tiny loss of silver luster but this is quite limited and probably on the entire ring over 90% of silver luster remains. The red and black enamel top is essentially Mint to the naked eye although with a few exceedingly trivial near pinpoint flakes off the perimeter black enamel but nothing even approaching a serious flaw. Overall a beautiful example with the upper 80% of the ring displaying essentially Mint. Overall VF.
