Item Description
9.25x11.75" spiral bound hardcover w/28 pages. Pages are stiff black paper with tipped-on sheets and other paper objects. This was the first of four such Christmas promo books issued yearly by Kay Kamen from 1933 to 1936 (in auction #202 we offered the second book from 1934 but incorrectly identified it as the first, only discovering the error upon receipt of this book). These promo books were issued in addition to the standard merchandise catalog that Kamen introduced in 1934 (see items #2193-94). Front cover has applied die-cut paper Mickey sticker. Inside front/back covers have applied "Walt Disney Enterprises Kay Kamen" simulated seal stickers. First page features "A Personal Message From Kay Kamen" which is a brief statement about doing a store-wide Christmas campaign. The following text sheets include detailed info on an opening day parade (mentioning such things as a float, costumed characters, giving Mickey chocolate bars as gifts to parade attendees, etc., in-store activities such as a game and puzzle contest, the use of "Mickey And Minnie Clowns" portrayed by "Small Size Persons-Not Necessarily Midgets", Mickey Mouse days w/give-aways including buttons and masks, publicity release involving plane trip in which Santa delivers Mickey to a store). This is followed by illustrated sheets featuring advertisements for such an event, Mickey model sheet, photo of Walt w/Mickey Charlotte Clark doll and his 1932 Oscar, "Mickey's Gala Premiere" original movie still, photos of the rare "Life-size" Mickey & Minnie Charlotte Clark display dolls (which we sold a set of in Auction #192 for the world record price of $151,534), photo of Old King Cole rare displays, sheet of Mickey stationery, photo of a huge pile of Mickey pin-back buttons, pair of Mickey stickers like the one on the front cover (one additional sticker is missing as evidenced by the trace of glue staining). There are eight of the black paper pages toward the back of the book that do not have any tipped-on objects, but only one of these shows glue staining where something was obviously mounted. The others are totally blank and since this is the first of this book we have seen, we don't know what/if/how much is missing but all the pages themselves are intact as issued. Lt. aging to contents mostly as originally mounted but still Exc. overall. Cover has trace of edge wear and some color rubs but remains totally bright w/high gloss finish. VF. This is an incredible and invaluable reference to the world of Mickey merchandise and promotion of 1933. Extremely rare and historically significant. The 1934 book we offered in auction #202 sold for $3,294.
