Item Description
Leo Glueckselig was born in Vienna in 1914 and migrated to New York in 1938 where he began his career as a graphic designer and illustrator. Since 1999 his artwork has been exhibited in Vienna, Salzburg, Graz, New York and Washington. He died in 2003 and his papers and much art went to the Leo Balck Institute, a NYC research library and archive that contains the most significant source material relating to the history of German speaking Jewry, from its origin to its destruction by the Nazis and continuing to the present day. Glueckselig rarely sold art publicly and most pieces went to museums. According to his daughter, this is the largest political related art he ever created. It is done in colored markers and signed, as he was doing in the 1970s, with his initials and date "LG 71." The plain black frame is 19x25" and the unmatted art just a fraction smaller. The art boldly caricatures Nixon holding a toy rattle in one hand topped by his Vice President Spiro Agnew - shown like a court jester wearing a dunce cap and holding a golf club. The U.S. Capitol is in the background. A small 5/16" square spot of paper is off the upper most left corner and barely shows. NM. Comes with Hake's COA.
