Item Description
Following the NYC Democratic Convention July 13-16 in Madison Square Garden, Clinton and Gore the next day launched their campaign via bus into the industrial mid-Atlantic states accompanied by wives, staff and 130 journalists in an eight bus caravan. That first day on the road as the nominees, they stopped at a GE plant in Camden, NJ, a United Steel Workers hall in Coatesville, PA and rolled into York, PA hours behind schedule to spend the night at the Yorktowne Hotel where a thinning crowd (I [Ted Hake] went home at 10:00pm) welcomed them. Newsman Harry McLaughlin, persistent as ever in his pursuit of stories and autographs, acquired that night (or the next day) a "Bill Clinton" signature across the star design of a "Clinton/Gore" double-sided 12x19" stiff paper sign, which has three folds and a couple tiny nicks on bottom edge. With the sign come six shots 3.5x5" taken by McLaughlin that night and the next day. These have printing dates on reverse of "Dec 92", but whereabouts of the negatives are unknown and we know of only this one print of each shot. First shows Clinton speaking on arrival at hotel. McLaughlin taped a note on reverse when he used the photo in his column six years later. Note reads "For: Around Town/For: York Dispatch/For: Wed. Dec. 23, 1998/Pres. Wm. Clinton Speaking To Rally In Front Of Yorktowne Hotel/On First Night After Winning Democrat Nomination For President - On July 17,1992. Return To Harry McLaughlin." Photo #2 shows Gore speaking plus Bill and Tipper in background. Photo #3 shows Clinton with hotel sign and partial image of campaign sign, like the one in this lot, being held up in background. Photo #4 shows Clinton with PA Senator Harrison Wofford. Photo #5 shows campaign bus. Photo #6 is from next day when Hillary and Tipper visited the Central Market, a farmer's market a few blocks from the hotel. They were looking at broccoli and because of George Bush's famous disdain for the vegetable, the joke became "Let's Put Broccoli In The White House Again." From the Harry McLaughlin Collection. Comes with Hake's COA.
