Item Description
The Harrisburg Seven were a group of religious anti-war activists lead by Philip Berrigan. In 1970, group attracted government attention and Berrigan, then imprisoned, and sister Elizabeth McAlister were caught trading letters that alluded to kidnapping National Security Adviser Henry Kissinger and blowing up steam tunnels in Washington D.C. federal buildings. US attorneys filed the case in the city of Harrisburg, PA. Activist attorney and former attorney General Ramsey Clark led the defense team. In the end, the jury remained hung and the defendants were freed. Taken around the third week of April 1972, these three color photos are mounted on thin cardboard. One includes banner reading "Communist Party Of Pennsylvania." Two show large symbolic protest figures and one shows protestors all in white. The back of this one has taped on notation paper by news columnist Harry McLaughlin and this reads "For: Around Town/For: York Dispatch/For: Fri-April 21/Anti-Vietnam War Protesters Outside Federal Building In Harrisburg - Site Of Trial Of Berrigan Brothers/Photo By Harry McLaughlin." Small handling creases and 1.75" hairline white scratch over the hands of the devil figure. Fine and clean overall. From the Harry McLaughlin Collection. Comes with Hake's COA.
