Item Description
Late 1800s. Made in Germany. Maker unknown. 9x14-1/8x1.25" deep wood box covered with paper labels has superb litho lid art of two tigers in poster design with poster being torn open at right by black dog with ribbon on collar. Contains 26 wood blocks, each 1-7/8x2-1/8" with paper graphics on each side. Front of each has image of animal or bird with their name matching letter on block. Reverse side has corresponding large alphabet letter. The set runs from antelope to zebra and includes dog, eagle, Indian elephant, pelican, noisy parrot, kittens titled "Young-ones", monkey with tail caught in vice titled "Unhappy". Box has sides of top and bottom wrapped in floral paper around edges and lid is hinged with clasps on front to open and close. Lid top is missing small bits of surface paper around edges and has a few faint moisture marks and trace of lt. dust soil. Fine. Block images have lt. rippling as originally applied but otherwise VF/Exc. Great design with superb graphics.
