Item Description
1.25” photo button has original white and pale green ribbons attached by the spring pin. Powell was the first African American elected to Congress from New York in 1944 when he represented the 22nd Congressional District which includes Harlem. He eventually broke ranks with the Democrats and in 1956 supported Eisenhower saying the Democratic platform was too weak on civil rights. This button would date from about that time period. Essentially Mint. Morry Greener Collection.
