Item Description
An excellent website explains the history behind this group of 17 buttons. Search: The Struggle For Free Speech At CCNY. The introduction to the site states: Student and faculty political activism at City College during the Great Depression was wide spread. CCNY students throughout the 1930s participated in protests against militarism, social and economic injustice at home and the threat of fascism abroad. They also fought to defend free speech on their campus. City College faculty also participated in anti-fascist organizations and formed the College Teachers Union; they also established a City College unit of the U.S. Communist Party. Mainstream newspapers at the time, opposed to such campus-based activism, labeled City College "The Little Red Schoolhouse." These buttons resulted from efforts by the college administration and New York City Board of Higher Education (and other political forces in the state) to attempt to silence the campus activism. Students were suspended or expelled and organizations and publications were banned. Faculty members were denied reappointment and those who failed to cooperate with the Rapp-Coudert Committee (1940-42), empowered to investigate "Communist Subversion" were dismissed from their jobs. In this particular group the 1.25" button specifies "Brooklyn College" and also reads "Save Our School/Committee To Defend Free Higher Education." Other buttons in the group either do not specify a school or specify C.C.N.Y. We believe these buttons are largely from 1940-1941 with the exception of final in the group which has a 1956 date (along with a couple of small age dots). The two buttons reading "You Can't Pull A Wilson On Us" were issued by the American Student Union in conjunction with a 1940 printed brochure arguing that like Wilson, Roosevelt promises to pursue peace while he is committed to war. The buttons range in size from 7/8" to 1.5". Other than the last button in the group all are Exc. to NM and display Mint. Many rare items.
