Item Description
10x15.75" with 48 pages copyright 1905 American-Journal Examiner. Copyright 1906 Frederick A. Stokes Co. Thin cardboard covers and six panel Sunday comic strips printed on front side of each sheet. The strip was also titled "And Sam Laughed" . Good natured black man Sam applies for various jobs in each strip and winds up getting fired after he laughs at his white employers. Controversial concept for the period, a black man making fun of white people's foilables. One strip is a cross-over with Rudolph Dirks in his studio working on the Katzenjammer Kids. He asks Sam to get him some coffee and Sam starts laughing when he sees the art , spills the coffee, and gets kicked out the door by Dirks. Covers are worn with pieces missing from edges, creasing and moisture marks. Fair/Good. Title page is tanned with moisture marks. Pages otherwise VG/Fine. The Overstreet Guide says "Extremely Rare". Listed at $600 in Good and $1,200 in Fine.
