Item Description
4-7/8" long brass luster spoon with "World's Fair" in the bowl and with panel of Hebrew lettering on blue enamel on the handle. While the piece is undated it is obviously from the 1904 era. We thought the text read "Derekh Shalom" meaning Path of Peace; however, further information from another source indicates the word is "Jerusalem." While the 1904 fair was being organized a local Zionist leader, Michael Stiffelman, was instrumental in getting the Fair's Board of Directors to approve the public display of the Zionist flag along those of other nations atop the Hall of Nations building. Coincidentally, Theodor Herzl, the founder of modern Zionism, died in 1904. NM displaying Mint.
