Item Description
Unused and unsealed envelope is 3-5/8x6.5". Text below the scene reads "Camp George H. Thomas, Chichkamauga Park, Postal Station, Chattanooga, Tenn." Tiny text left of the scene reads "Copyright 1898/By T.H. Payne & Co." Perched on fence rails is young black boy with threadbare clothes and holes in his pants at knees. He holds an American flag in one hand. To his right is younger girl clutching fence rail with her American flag held by the flag staff stuck into her hair. Between the two of them a burro joins in watching. He, being a jackass, holds a Cuban flag in his mouth. If this is an intended slur it would be directed at Spain rather than Cuba. NM. Morry Greener Collection.
