Auction #205 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1426 in auction 205
Item Description
While Kitchener won fame in 1898 for securing control of the Sudan as well as in the Second Boer War, this button was issued shortly after his death as Secretary of State for War when he died in 1916 while aboard a war ship taking him to negotiations in Russia that was sunk by a German mine. His image is most famous for appearing on recruiting posters with exclamation "Your Country Needs You!" On the button his large image is shown above columns of marching troops below with a sunrise at right "Victory." Reverse has tiny 1/8" cello split by the collet but front displays Mint. Only example we've seen.
