Item Description
The Junior Justice Society debuted in an ad in All-Star Comics #14, the December 1942 issue. Like other comic book clubs, readers were offered a membership kit. One item of that kit was a silver luster stamped metal badge available in 1942. Unlike those mass distribution badges in a silver finish and stamped, this piece is all in brass with high relief detail on the front and a perfectly flat reverse which has a short pin at the top designed to be worn with the accompanying brass clutch. This prototype, likely unique, would have been presented to the executives at DC Comics for their approval before the badge was put into production. On the back of the piece the finish is a combination of golden brass and more copper-toned metal. On the front of the piece about 90% has brass finish with 10% shading to the copper tone. This is the item in Hake's Pop Culture Guide listed as JSA-5. While the guide lists values in three grades, this is in fact the only known example. The Guide specifies values of $1,850 in Fine and $3,700 in NM. This badge would grade Exc. to NM depending upon one's standards. Displays beautifully and an extreme rarity.
