Item Description
In 1935 Warner Bros. released the movie Devil Dogs of the Air based on the U.S. Marine Flying Corps. The movie starred James Cagney and Quaker Oats seized on the movie as an opportunity for product promotion via premiums. Their newspaper and store advertising promoted both the movie, their products and listed a number of premiums including ring, badge, model airplane kits, a leatherette flying helmet and the aviator goggles offered here. A very aged 2.75x7x1" deep cardboard box with "Quaker Oats" return address (missing one side of end flaps) contains essentially Mint 2.5x6.5 goggles consisting of a plastic frame with lenses all surrounded by a brown plush intended to cushion them against the face when they are held on by the maroon elastic head strap. These are shown in the Quaker ads as "Genuine Aviator's Goggles." While the box is just Fair the goggles are Mint and the only example we've seen. Rare.
