Item Description
Nine items all c. 1944 for Dixie class destroyer tender built during World War II for the U.S. Navy. The ship's task was to service destroyers in, or near, battle areas and to keep them fit for duty, hence the use of Snow White's Doc as the mascot. Ship was launched Dec. 7, 1942 and commissioned Jan. 5, 1944. The insignia features Doc holding a ship and he is surrounded by tools and other items used to service ships. The two most impressive pieces are 10x12" plaque w/high relief painted metal attachment on wood shield-shape piece and large 6" dia. solid cast aluminum medallion which includes commission date of 1/5/1944. Other items include 4" tall ceramic mug, invitation and menu for the commission, personal information booklet, two unused match packs, pen. Mug has fading to image and small base chips, VG. All else w/scattered lt. wear/aging but mostly VF. An instant collection.
