Item Description
This early (c. 1890s) and extremely rare promotional give-away is made of stiff paper 5.25" wide and 15.5" dia. Designed to be glued into a conical shape and then placed on the glass chimney of a kerosene lamp. Only one of the two thin support wires remain. Printed by CC Sack & Co. of Buffalo, NY. Blue bottom border reads "This Lamp Shade Is Presented To You And All Good Farmers By Wm. Deering & Co. Chicago, Manufacturers Of The Most Complete And Perfect Line Of Grain And Grass Cutting Machinery In The World, Also Fine Grade Of Binder Twine." Shade has five scenes - first shows young girl sitting on stool in corner w/broken cup on floor beside dog; next is "Deering Front Cut Giant Mower;" then "New Deering Mower; Deering Light Reaper" and "Deering All-Steel Binder." Found years ago under the floorboards of an East Berlin, PA. house, the shade has all over dust soiling, though the colors remain vibrant and strong. Shade also has some small tears/chips that do not greatly detract from overall appearance of the piece. This item was extensively researched over the past decade by the owner and despite consulting farm museums and Deering collectors, it seems no one has previously seen such an item. Perhaps a give-away from the Deering booth at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. VG. Extremely rare. See early lamp advertising item #481 and Wm. Deering equipment advertising items #533.
