Item Description
14x17" printed baptismal certificate then beautifully hand-colored and hand-lettered to document the Berks County, PA. birth and baptism of a son born May 18, 1848 and christened Lewis Cass in honor of the Democratic candidate nominated by the Baltimore convention May 22-25, 1848. The boy's full name was Lewis Cass Bechtel Yergey. Twenty-five years later he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1873 with a medical degree. Certificate has some small defects with five small tape stains on margins, 1/8" hole center right on angel's wing, .5" hole on left ribbon held in eagle's beak, pair of 2" tears and a few smaller on upper margin with archival tape repairs on reverse. A few small pieces off margins, a few tan marks and lower right corner slightly dark due to moisture. The defects are small and detract little from great mid-19th Century designs and hand-coloration. A unique and most charming document of ideal size to display. Text is in German with exception of names and places. All lettered by hand with great care.
