Item Description
1.25" with W&H paper used only 1898-1900 and this button is dated for the "Golden Jubilee" of the group with the years listed on the rim "1849-1899" along with the acronym "I.O.F.S. of I." This order is the oldest national Jewish fraternal order still in existence. It was founded in New York City January 10, 1849 by a group of men who were Masons and Odd Fellows. The acronym appearing on the button stands for its original name which was "Independent Order of Free Sons of Israel." The emblem shows a female figure with spear and shield protecting a younger woman consoling a young naked child. Light wear on the back paper and the cello surface is a little dull rather than highly glossy but there is no stain or obvious wear. Only example we've seen. See WWI Relief For Starving Jews, Armenians and Poles button #802.
