Item Description
Two items for Pillsbury premiums that were never produced. ©1943 F.A.S. Sam Gold. 3.5x11" stiff paper 16 page postcard book has original art in India ink and watercolor featuring Chicago Tribune Syndicate characters in humorous situations. Front cover has soldiers laughing w/Perry Winkle postcard in background. Humorous images include characters Little Orphan Annie and Sandy; Annie and Punjab; similar Perry Winkle as cover; Moon Mullins and Uncle Willie; Smokey Stover and Chief (two different); Harold Teen and Shadow (two different); Smilin’ Jack and Downwind; Dick Tracy; Terry w/FDR, Stalin, and Churchill; Skeezix. Each card has space for service members name which has been filled in w/"Sam Gold" in pencil, backs have postcard design in ink. Inside covers have spaces for correspondence records, back cover has ink text "Pillsbury Advertising." Lt. cover dust soil, otherwise bright and Near Exc. Comes w/somewhat similar all photostat booklet titled "Smile-O-Cards" w/12 featuring totally different designs and including Donald Duck and Popeye. Each has empty space to put in service member's photo. Glue stains on blank backs as made. Fine. The "Cheerup Cards" original art book is one of the best original art lots of all the Gold Archives items we have offered over the years. From the archives of premium creators Sam & Gordon Gold accompanied by a letter to that effect from Gordon Gold.
