Item Description
2" dia. with original crystal plus large movable loop at top. Dial shows small building representing his base camp Little America on the Ross Ice Shelf while overhead flies the plane he used to fly over the South Pole in 1929. While the watch winds and the second hand moves, the hour and minute hands cannot be adjusted as something on the inside causes the minute hand to stick. All the silver luster is off the front of the case but about 90% remains on the reverse. This reads at the top "Trail Blazer" and at the bottom "Commemorating Byrd's Antarctic Expedition." Pictured in small but exacting detail is his portrait surrounded by a fur parka set against a world globe flanked by a pair of flags. At the left background is his ship City of New York while at the right is the base camp with several buildings and pair of tall radio antennas which were used to communicate with the outside world during the expedition. Overhead flies the plane he used to fly over the pole in 1929. Very scarce and front dial displays essentially Mint. See following Zep pocket watch.
