While the watch winds and the second hand moves, the hour and minute hands cannot be adjusted as something on the inside causes the minute hand to stick. All the silver luster is off the front of the case but about 90% remains on the reverse. This reads at the top "Trail Blazer" and at the bottom "Commemorating Byrd's Antarctic Expedition." Pictured in small but exacting detail is his portrait surrounded by a fur parka set against a world globe flanked by a pair of flags. At the left background is his ship City of New York while at the right is the base camp with several buildings and pair of tall radio antennas which were used to communicate with the outside world during the expedition.
