Item Description
2.75x6" check for $250 made out to the Lake Harmony Lodge and is dated July 15, 1973. This was during the period of filming for "The Sting," the popular 1973 American caper film set in 1936 that involves a complicated plot by two professional grifters played by Newman and Robert Redford, to con a mob boss played by Robert Shaw. The film was nominated for 10 Oscars and won seven, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. Check memo area reads "Racing Expense Pocono," referencing Newman's extracurricular activities as a professional racing driver, auto racing team owner, and auto racing enthusiast. Newman won several national championships as a driver in Sports Car Club of America road racing, and his race teams won several championships in open wheel IndyCar racing. City National Bank check No. 1152 has bank stamp on front and cancellation marks on reverse. Check has been filled out and signed in blue ink. Vertical fold at center, barely running through Newman's signature, though not affecting it. VF. From the Phil Delaney Collection. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA LOA.
