Item Description
These are 7/8" and a total of 152 players are shown in the full set of small and/or large name lettering varieties. Of the 189 buttons in this near set, only three are missing the backpaper. Ten have more than typical surface wear on close inspection but still display cleanly. Only these three have a more serious defect: Brooklyn Superbas "Bell" large letters has a "Y" shaped cello surface cut at center; St. Louis Cardinals "Bresnahan" different picture version is flattened but displays Mint; St. Louis Cardinals "Hauser" is lightly tanned. This near set is remarkably free of stain with just an isolated tiny spot or two on White Sox "Parent"; Giants "Murray" large letters; and Pirates "Maddox." This group abounds with Hall of Famers. Major names and rarities in small letters includes Chance, Ty Cobb, Speaker and many others. The large lettering variety includes Mordecai Brown, Clarke, Duffy, Huggins, Hugh Jennings, McGraw, and Tinker in addition to those of both large and small lettering varieties including: Walter Johnson, Mathewson, and Cy Young. These are the 15 missing buttons: Karger-Red Sox; Speaker Red Sox; Wheat Brooklyn Superbas; Chance Cubs; Needham Cubs; Cobb Detroit; O'Leary Detroit; Cree Yankees; Warhop Yankees; Eddie Collins Athletics; Dygert Athletics; Pelty St. Louis Browns; Wallace (no cap) St. Louis Browns; Bresnahan St. Louis Browns; Elberfeld Washington Senators. Overall, of the 189 buttons in this group, nearly all display NM to Mint and we grade 170 of the 189 Exc. to Mint. Many years went into building the set to this level and only 15 buttons are needed to complete it. The one complete set we've sold in five decades was way back in 1999 and at the time it realized $5796.
