Item Description
1.25" with W&H backpaper used only 1900-1901.  Great color depiction of Jim at cash register.  Jim Key was trained by "Dr." William Key, a man born a slave and then self trained as a veterinarian known for horse whispering and animal healing skills.  William Key became one of the most recognized African-Americans of his time.  He taught Jim Key to read, spell, recognize money and do basic arithmetic.  Jim performed nationwide and was the top money maker at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair.  His exhibit has officially opened "On The Pike" by President Roosevelt's daughter Alice.  See her button item #218.  The amazing feats of Jim caused animal rights advocates of the S.P.C.A. to feature him for the cause of humane treatment of animals.  Exc. and displays NM.  Scarce.
