Item Description
The famous Shadow blue coal glow in dark ring (see item 1490) was sent in this mailer with this instruction sheet by the radio sponsor in 1941. These two pieces are the examples used for the photos in the Hake Pop Culture guide. Also see the following related pieces used for distribution in Canada. This USA version used an envelope 3-1/8x5.5". The reverse flap was opened causing a 1.75" tear on the blank flap and this extends as a 1" tear to the right of the postal permit on the front. There is also a little browning to the left of the large image of "The Shadow" along with about a half dozen tiny tan age dots. Envelope includes NY address of "D.L. & W. Coal Company" along with typed name and address of recipient in Williamstown, Pa. The blue and white instruction sheet is 2-11/16x4.25". This has one horizontal fold as done for envelope insertion. There is just a little light tanning of the paper mostly on reverse and a couple of extremely small crease lines caused by the paper lying against the ring. The instruction sheet has instructions for "Charging" your ring so it will glow in the dark along with instructions for sizing plus text repeated twice "You Are Now A Member Of 'The Shadow' Stop-Crime Club." Reverse of the USA version is an order form for additional rings with an expiration date of December 31, 1941. Both of these rare pieces are in Fine condition. The Hake Pop Culture guide prices for the pair are: Good $600; Fine $1,200; Near Mint $1,800. See next related item.
