Item Description
Atacamite is a bright green, dark emerald-green to blackish green copper halide mineral first described from deposits in the Atacama Desert of Chile in 1801. A comparatively rare mineral, it is formed from primary copper minerals in the oxidation or weathering zone of arid climates. We are offering a 9x9.5x3.5" deep sample covered in a dark emerald-green atacamite coating. This specimen weighs almost 12.25 lbs. It comes from the La Farola ("Lighthouse" in Spanish) mine in Tierra Amarilla, Chile. This is in the Atacama Desert, one of the driest and harshest regions on earth, north of Copiapó, in the North. The region was brought under the international spotlight in 2010, when 33 Chilean miners were trapped 700 meters underground. The crew of experienced miners and technical support personnel subsequently survived for a record 69 days deep underground before their rescue.
