Item numbers 1 through 1234 in auction 207
Item Description
Train made a fortune using clipper ships to reach San Francisco, CA. and he organized the Union Pacific Railroad. He was an independent candidate in 1872 and signed this 2.75x4.75" card just after the Nov., 1872 elections. He was also jailed for his defense of feminist Victoria Woodhull and financed "The Revolution," the newspaper of Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. He became eccentric in his later years and would sit in New York City's Central Park, giving away dimes but speaking only to children and animals. Card bears printed words "Autograph Of" and "187_" date which he inked in "2," reading 1872. Final line reads "Omaha, Nov. 23rd 1872." Large, bold signature w/some ink bleed to first letter of each word "Dr. Francis Train." Below he added "Civis Americanus Sum" which translates to "I Am An American Citizen." Above this he has penned a poem - "Our Mother Earth And Under The Sun, Three Little Words From Freedom's Gun, Shall Tell Where Liberty Begun." Unique and NM as signed.
