Item Description
17.75x20.5" double archival mat has 9.75x12.5" window with drawing in India ink and gray watercolor. Used as promotional art for the 1929 film starring William Boyd, later famous as Hopalong Cassidy. Cafe scene has Boyd in Marine costume being hit on head by artillery shell as pretty girl looks on. Titled "Imagine My Embarrassment" in pencil at top with ink caption at bottom reading "When I Regained Consciousness In A Hospital Three Hours Later And Found Out That The Steel Shell Fell Off Of The Piano Onto My Head - Was NOT A Prop." Lower left-hand corner has tiny inked "Walter Lantz" signature. Lantz, a pioneer in animation, is best known for the creation of the first Technicolor cartoon and also introduced Andy Panda, Chilly Willy and Woody Woodpecker. Reverse side of art has large full signature with his name and Hollywood address in pencil. Well drawn and Exc. The earliest original art we've seen by Lantz.
