Auction #207 - Part II
Item numbers 1235 through 2949 in auction 207
Item Description
1.25" bw photo button without dot pattern has slight yellow tone due to nature of the celluloid covering but no stain. However, there is a very fine hairline cello crack on the top edge running from the letter "E" of "THE" to the letter "T" of "TARZAN." Without knowing this hairline is there, unless the piece is viewed extremely closely, the hairline comes close to being invisible without magnification. Rest of the celluloid is amazingly clean with exceedingly little surface wear for a button from 1920. Reverse of the button has dark layer of oxidation but no stain on reverse celluloid. Reverse has 5/8" hairline cello split by the collet but such a fine line that it can barely be seen without magnification. No backpaper as issued. Rim text reads "The Son Of Tarzan The Mystic Order Of The Jungle." Serial was by National Film Corp. and button pictures Tarzan as played by P. Dempsey Tabler shown with a man dressed as ape at lower left and with woman in skimpy outfit seated amidst jungle foliage in right bkg. The yellowed celluloid front obscures the fact that the rim was made with very pale blue tint but a faint shade of bluetone remains showing around the side edges of the button. Design on this example is about 1/32" off-center to the right. In spite of hairline and yellowing, button actually displays in totally clean and glossy condition. Our undamaged example in Auction #206 realized over $1750.00. This displays nearly as nice.
