Auction #207 - Part II
Item numbers 1235 through 2949 in auction 207
Item Description
Lot of two pieces, and includes several Orthoceras specimens. Orthoceras is a genus of extinct nautiloid cephalopod and the ancestor of modern squids. These are slender, elongate shells, ornamented w/fine lirae (fine lines or ridges on the exterior of the shells) that have been polished to a high gloss. The first piece measures 11.5x12.75" and weighs 10 lbs. and includes 14 specimens. The second piece measures 11x19" and weighs just under 10 lbs. and includes 15 specimens. These examples came from the region around Erfoud, Morocco and are 350 million years old. Orthoceras are commonly found in large clusters like this and some scientists suspect that these assemblages likely represent post-mating mass deaths, as are common among modern cephalopods. While a more common fossil, Orthoceras makes for an impressive display given the clustering of specimens offered here.
